Spanish I
Textbook:
¡Avancemos! Level 1, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Necessary Supplies:
3-subject notebook
folder (can use pockets in notebook)
iPad
Course Description:
Spanish I is a high school level class for which the letter grade and grade point average will carry over to 9th grade next year. Students are considered beginners but will work toward verbal fluency and reading comprehension; students will be increasingly immersed in Spanish as the year progresses.
In terms of vocabulary, the course will cover greetings, classroom expressions and procedures, weather, seasons, birthdays, ages and dates, friends, sports and leisure, school schedules, materials and activities, telling time, family, foods, clothing, shopping and restaurant expressions, household items, chores, and party planning. Students will learn how to conjugate present and present-progressive tense verbs, definite and indefinite articles, possessive and descriptive adjectives, adjective-noun agreement, affirmative commands, as well as other grammatical concepts. We will also study several Spanish-speaking countries and their culture and holidays.
Homework Policy:
All homework is to be completed on time. Late assignments will be graded down one full grade. If a student is absent, they will have one day for each day absent to complete the missed assignment. Missing grades will be counted as zeros; please check Schoology regularly to make sure all work is turned in.
Assessments and Grading:
Daily assignments and homework: 10-25 points
Participation: 25 points
Quizzes: 50 points
Tests: 100 points
Projects: 50-150 points
A Note About the Language Acquisition Process:
Learning a second language is a culminating process, meaning that students will not acquire Spanish if they do not work to retain and use the grammar and vocabulary of previously studied lessons. The lessons in the text build on prior chapters, so past content is continually recycled. Hence, assessments will almost always have past vocabulary and grammar on them in addition to the material of the current unit. My expectation is that students will study the material with an aim to apply and remember it, and will continue to acquired language in their classroom speech and writing once we move on from past chapters.

Other Imporant Information:
- A set of headphones is highly recommended for each student. While working with sound, students need to hear their own work without being bothered by their neighbor’s sound. iPod and iPhone head buds are acceptable.
- Keep cellphones put away unless we are using them for classroom activities!
- Please use network printers which are closest to your workstation. Remember that all printing is on a quota system. THINK BEFORE YOU PRINT!
- Do not in any way alter the appearance of the computer desktop (i.e. deleting icons, setting screensavers etc.)
- Seating charts will be used. Movement of students from their assigned seats is not permitted without instructor approval.
- Plagiarism is very serious. Students found to be copying other students' documents and/or projects will receive no credit and will be referred to the office for further discipline. We will address this in class and learn how to prevent this.
